Chairman Krishnamoorthi Commends FDA’s Decision to Ban Menthol Cigarettes as Victory for Public Health
Washington, D.C. (Apr. 29, 2021)—Today, Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi, the Chairman of the Subcommittee on Economic and Consumer Policy, issued this statement following the announcement that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) will ban the sale of menthol-flavored cigarettes:
“Banning menthol cigarettes will protect public health and contribute to racial justice. It will save so many lives, particularly in the Black community. For decades, Big Tobacco has bombarded African Americans with menthol advertisements to the point where smoking-related illnesses are the number one cause of death for African Americans. And Big Tobacco has peddled menthol cigarettes as the on-ramp to smoking for so many children and young adults. Not anymore. The Biden-Harris Administration continues to prove that it will make bold decisions for public health.”
On April 21, 2021, Chairman Krishnamoorthi, along with Senator Dick Durbin and Congressman Bobby Rush, wrote to FDA, urging a ban of menthol-flavored cigarettes.
