Press Release
Members of Congress to Hear from NYC Community Leaders on Environmental Justice Reforms, Impacts of Pollution

Washington, D.C. (March 9, 2022)—On Friday, March 11, 2022, at approximately 11:10 a.m. ET in Queens, New York, Rep. Carolyn Maloney, Chairwoman of the Committee on Oversight and Reform, and Rep. Raúl M. Grijalva, Chairman of the Committee on Natural Resources, will hold an in-person press conference to kick off a two-day series of events to receive community input on oversight priorities and legislation related to environmental justice, including the importance of assessing the cumulative impacts of pollution and directing resources to environmental justice communities.  The Chairs will hear from environmental justice leaders on the implementation and oversight of the Biden-Harris Justice40 Initiative, which is intended to ensure that climate and clean infrastructure investments benefit frontline communities, and is based on state-level policy currently being implemented in New York.

Following the press conference, members of the media are invited to join a site visit of the Ravenswood Generating Station, the city’s largest power plant, with Members of Congress, environmental justice leaders, and neighborhood residents.  The visit will examine ongoing efforts to advance environmental justice by repowering the plant with renewable energy within the context of state policy and budget actions, and will also highlight relevant federal legislation.
