Chairwoman Maloney Applauds President Biden’s Executive Order to Make Federal Government a Leader in Tackling Climate Change
Washington, D.C. (December 8, 2021)—Today, Rep. Carolyn B. Maloney, Chairwoman of the Committee on Oversight and Reform, issued the following statement after President Biden issued an executive order, entitled “Catalyzing America’s Clean Energy Industries and Job through Sustainability” to make the federal government a leader in tackling the climate crisis while creating good jobs for American workers.
“Today’s executive order leverages the federal government’s unique role as the nation’s largest employer and purchaser of goods and services to make real progress in the fight against climate change. As Chairwoman of the Oversight Committee, I’ve fought to make key elements of the President’s climate plan a reality, from electrifying the federal fleet, to advancing green buildings and green procurement, to promoting environmental justice. The security of our country and future generations relies on a coordinated, whole-of-government response to the climate crisis. I look forward to working with the White House on this critical work, including by urging my Senate colleagues to pass the Build Back Better Act.”
Today’s executive order complements many of the Committee's provisions included in the Build Back Better Act, such as the electrification of federal vehicles and the procurement of energy efficient, low-carbon materials to reduce the carbon footprint of the federal government.
Chairwoman Maloney has made tackling the climate crisis a priority of the Committee. On December 3, 2021, the Committee passed the Chairwoman’s Federal Agency Climate Planning, Resilience, and Enhanced Preparedness Act (PREP Act), which would ensure that climate change mitigation, adaption and resilience are integrated into every aspect of government operations.
