Press Release

Washington, D.C. (Feb. 24, 2020)—Today, Rep. Carolyn B. Maloney, Chairwoman of the Committee on Oversight and Reform, issued the following statement in response to President Joe Biden’s announcement of additional members to the Postal Service Board of Governors:

“I applaud President Biden’s nominations of three new members to the Postal Service Board of Governors.  It is crystal clear that the Postal Service’s performance and its financial condition have deteriorated significantly, and new and better leadership is urgently needed.  I also commend the President for his continuing commitment to appoint individuals who represent the diversity of America.  The Board nominations today reflect that commitment.”

Chairwoman Maloney held a hearing today to discuss draft legislation that includes several provisions to relieve the financial burdens under which the Postal Service is currently operating and to enhance transparency regarding performance.  The current draft includes provisions on Medicare integration, repealing a requirement for the Postal Service to pre-fund retiree health care, and service performance standards.
