Chairwoman Maloney’s Statement on Supreme Court Decision on Texas 6-Week Abortion Ban
Washington, D.C. (September 2, 2021)—Today, Rep. Carolyn B. Maloney, the Chairwoman of the Committee on Oversight and Reform, issued the following statement after the Supreme Court of the United States decided by a vote of 5-4 to deny an emergency request to stay Texas’ six-week abortion ban (S.B. 8):
“In the dead of night, the Supreme Court rebuffed decades of precedent and sent a clear message to people in the United States that it will no longer uphold their constitutional right to abortion. In Texas, it is now illegal to end a pregnancy under nearly all circumstances. As throughout history, wealthy people may find ways to access safe abortion care, but it is those who have lower incomes and people of color who will suffer the most.
“In just a few months, the Supreme Court is slated to take up another draconian abortion law in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health. With last night’s decision, the writing is on the wall. Congress must immediately pass the Women’s Health Protection Act to safeguard the right to receive an abortion across the United States.”
