Chairwoman Maloney’s Statement on Supreme Court Inaction Allowing Texas 6-Week Abortion Ban to Take Effect
Washington, D.C. (September 1, 2021)—Today, Rep. Carolyn B. Maloney, the Chairwoman of the Committee on Oversight and Reform, issued the following statement regarding the Supreme Court’s failure to enjoin Texas’ six-week abortion ban (S.B. 8), allowing the law to take effect today:
“In refusing to intervene last night, the Supreme Court tipped the scales of justice in favor of one of the most draconian state abortion bans in history. S.B. 8 strips away abortion access for most Texans. The Supreme Court has put the health and safety of Texans—especially people with lower incomes and people of color—in jeopardy. The right to abortion is guaranteed under the Constitution, and we cannot allow radical state lawmakers to undermine that right for political gain.
“With the Court’s inaction, it is clearer than ever that Congress must take bold action to preserve and expand abortion access in the wake of these existential threats, starting by passing the Women’s Health Protection Act. As Chairwoman of the Committee on Oversight and Reform, I am fighting every day to ensure that no one is denied access to abortion care because of extremist anti-choice ideology.”
