Cummings Named Oversight Committee Chairman

Press Release

Washington, D.C. (Jan. 4, 2019)—Today, Rep. Elijah E. Cummings issued the following statement after his colleagues in the House of Representatives voted to name him Chairman of the Committee on Oversight and Reform for the 116th Congress:

“I am humbled and honored to be the next Chairman of the primary investigative body of Congress.  The American people spoke clearly in this election.  They voted for the checks and balances that are mandated by the Constitution, and they voted for greater transparency and accountability in government.  My priority will be to restore rigorous, responsible, and fact-based oversight while focusing on issues that affect the American people every single day.  I hope we can exercise the powers of the Oversight Committee in a bipartisan way to do what we all swore to do less than 24 hours ago—fulfill our duty to uphold the Constitution and serve as a truly independent check on the Executive Branch.”
