Oversight Committee Calls Purdue Pharma CEO and Sackler Family to Hearing on Their Role in Fueling Opioid Epidemic
Washington, D.C. (Nov. 25, 2020)—Rep. Carolyn B. Maloney, the Chairwoman of the Committee on Oversight and Reform, invited Craig Landau, the President and CEO of Purdue Pharma L.P., and four members of the Sackler family to testify at a hearing next month on their role in fueling the opioid epidemic.
“Even after entering into a settlement with the Department of Justice (DOJ) in 2007 on charges of misbranding—for which Purdue paid $600 million in fines for misleading the public about OxyContin’s risk—your company continued to recklessly market OxyContin, despite knowledge of the medication’s potential for misuse,” Chairwoman Maloney wrote.
Purdue Pharma, which sells the highly addictive pain medication OxyContin, has generated more than $30 billion in revenue from sales since bringing the drug to market in 1996. Yesterday, Purdue pleaded guilty to three federal felony charges for its sales and marketing practices related to OxyContin.
In addition to Landau, Chairwoman Maloney invited Dr. Richard Sackler, Mr. David Sackler, Dr. Kathe Sackler, and Mr. Mortimer D.A. Sackler to testify. For nearly 70 years, members of the Sackler family have owned a controlling share of Purdue Pharma. Since OxyContin was brought to market, the Sackler family has withdrawn more than $10 billion from the company.
“The Committee has obtained documents showing that your family was closely involved in Purdue’s efforts to grow the market share for OxyContin and other opioids, even after entering into a prior settlement with DOJ on charges of misbranding,” wrote Chairwoman Maloney.
The hearing is scheduled for December 8, 2020, at 10:00 a.m. The hearing will livestream on the Committee’s website.
