Press Release

Washington, D.C. (Dec. 20, 2019)—Today, Rep. Carolyn B. Maloney, the Chairwoman of the Committee on Oversight and Reform, along with Rep. Jamie Raskin, the Chairman of the Subcommittee on Civil Rights and Civil Liberties, and Reps. Jackie Speier, Debbie Wasserman Schultz, and Lois Frankel sent letters to Attorney General William Barr and Richard Swearingen, the Commissioner of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, seeking documents and information regarding the favorable deal for sexual predator Jeffrey Epstein and the concealment of the deal from the victims of Mr. Epstein’s crimes.

Earlier this year, Chairman Elijah E. Cummings and Chairman Raskin joined Reps. Speier, Wasserman Schultz, and Frankel in requesting a briefing from the Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR) at the Department of Justice.  The Department declined to provide the briefing or any estimate for when it would be complete.

“Since the Department has declined to provide the briefing or any other information about the status of its investigation, the Committee is now commencing its own review,” wrote the Members.
