ICYMI: Coverage From Oversight Republicans’ Border Trip

WASHINGTON — House Committee on Oversight and Reform Ranking Member James Comer (R-Ky.) and Rep. Yvette Herrell (R-N.M.) led a delegation of seven Committee Republicans to El Paso, Texas and New Mexico to witness firsthand the humanitarian and national security crisis unfolding at the U.S.-Mexico border as a result of President Biden’s open borders policies.

Comer recently returned from leading a congressional delegation to the southern border in El Paso, Texas, where he toured gaps in the wall and spoke with Border Patrol agents, local law enforcement, and residents who live right on the border.

While much of the attention has been focused on Arizona, California, and Texas, locals in New Mexico are now expressing their concerns after seeing an uptick in illegal crossings from the southern border. Several lawmakers toured the area on April 12. It was a busy day and I got to ride along with them as they toured both New Mexico and Texas. In fact, this was the first trip to the border for many of them.

Several Republican members of the U.S. House Committee on Oversight and Reform paid a visit to El Paso, Texas and southern New Mexico Monday to speak with U.S. Customs and Border Protection personnel, local farmers and ranchers, and select invitees, culminating in an inspection of the border wall and this site, located two miles down a dirt road from Highway 9 a few miles east of Hachita.

Some are calling it a crisis at the southern border and lawmakers are taking a look at the issue first hand. Congresswoman Yvette Herrell and Republican leaders headed south of Columbus on Monday.

New Mexico ranchers are asking lawmakers to put a stop to the caravan of people crossing the southern border illegally. “We had an individual approach my parents’ house about a week ago that had crossed the border illegally and it took Border Patrol over an hour to respond to come apprehend this individual,” said Russell Johnson who owns a ranch along the New Mexico and Mexico border.

It is being called a humanitarian crisis on the southern border and the impact is now being felt in Pennsylvania. Republican Congressman Fred Keller is on the House Oversight Committee and wanted to oversee what was happening, so he traveled to the border.
