Comer: Oversight Committee Must Assess White House Security Practices After Discovery of Cocaine

Requests a briefing and information from U.S. Secret Service Director Cheatle

WASHINGTON— Today, House Committee on Oversight and Accountability Chairman James Comer (R-Ky.) sent a letter to United States Secret Service (USSS) Director Kimberly Cheatle requesting a briefing and information related to the discovery of cocaine in the White House. In the letter, Chairman Comer emphasizes that the alarming development requires the Oversight Committee to assess White House security practices and determine whose failures led to an evacuation of the building and finding of the illegal substance.

“The presence of illegal drugs in the White House is unacceptable and a shameful moment in the White House’s history,” said Chairman Comer. “Congress funds White House security procedures, and the Secret Service has a responsibility to maintain effective safety protocols. This incident and the eventual evacuation of staff now clearly raises concerns about the level of security maintained at the White House. The Committee has oversight jurisdiction over USSS operations, and I look forward to additional information from Director Cheatle.”
