House Oversight and House Intel Committees launch joint investigation into Obama-Era Uranium One Deal
Washington, DC — House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence Chairman Devin Nunes and Committee on Oversight and Government Reform Chairman Trey Gowdy today are announcing a joint inquiry into Obama administration regulatory approvals related to the U.S. uranium industry, foreign donations seeking to curry favor and influence with U.S. officials, whether a federal nuclear bribery probe developed evidence of wrongdoing connected to the Uranium One mining company, and Department of Justice criminal and counterintelligence investigations into bribery, extortion, and other related matters connected to Russian acquisition of U.S. uranium.
The Intelligence Committee will scrutinize whether these investigations—and related intelligence activities–were properly conducted and reported to Congress. The Oversight Committee will examine the Obama administration’s interagency response. The Intelligence Committee inquiry will be led by the Subcommittee on Emerging Threats chaired by Rep. Peter King, and the Oversight Committee inquiry will be led by the Subcommittee on National Security chaired by Rep. Ron DeSantis.
The Committees will follow the facts wherever they lead, and are eager to hear from anyone who has relevant information and wishes to come forward. We want to be very clear that we expect the executive branch will cooperate with our efforts and not attempt to deter those who seek to assist Congress in executing its constitutional oversight responsibility.
A letter written in 2010 by Rep. King and other Members of Congress to then-Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner expressing concern over the sale of U.S. uranium to the Russians is available here.
