Wenstrup Invites American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten to Testify on Pandemic-Era School Closures
WASHINGTON — Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic Chairman Brad Wenstrup (R-Ohio) invited Ms. Randi Weingarten, President of the American Federation of Teachers (AFT), to testify at a hearing titled “The Consequences of School Closures, Part 2: The President of the American Federation of Teachers Ms. Randi Weingarten” on April 26, 2023 to delve into the role Ms. Weingarten and the AFT played in editing the CDC’s school reopening guidance and keeping schools closed longer than necessary.
Ms. Randi Weingarten served as President of the American Federation of Teachers during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. Prior to her role with AFT, Ms. Weingarten served as President of the United Federation of Teachers and worked as a high school teacher and attorney.
Earlier this month, Chairman Wenstrup sent a letter to Randi Weingarten pressing her to provide documents and information related to her role in revising and editing the CDC’s COVID-19 school reopening guidance. The Chairman also held a hearing on March 28, 2023 titled “The Consequences of School Closures: Intended and Unintended” to — in part — examine the role teachers unions played in advising the CDC on school closure decisions.
The invitation transmitted to Ms. Randi Weingarten late Monday night can be found here.
