Wenstrup to Hold Hearing on COVID-19 Nursing Home Policy Failures

WASHINGTON — Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic Chairman Brad Wenstrup (R-Ohio) will hold a hearing titled “’Like Fire Through Dry Grass’: Nursing Home Mortality & COVID-19 Policies” to gather facts about pandemic-era, nursing home policy decisions — specifically in New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania — that led to the deaths of tens of thousands of Americans. Instead of protecting the most vulnerable population, Governor Andrew Cuomo (D-N.Y.) and other state officials disregarded available options and mandated that nursing homes and long-term care facilities accept thousands of positive COVID-19 patients. This hearing will examine the consequences of these harmful policy decisions and investigate the failed leadership of state policy makers during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Thousands of America’s loved ones were put in harm’s way to serve a political agenda. Instead of following the available science and data, state leaders implemented misguided and reckless nursing home policies that abandoned America’s elderly during their time of need. Forcing nursing homes to accept COVID positive patients during the height of the pandemic was a catastrophic mistake that we must ensure never happens again. The Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic is committed to holding these policy leaders accountable and providing transparency to all Americans,” said Chairman Wenstrup.
