HEARING ADVISORY: Joint Subcommittee Hearing to Examine Taxpayer Cost of Illegal Immigration

WASHINGTON – The Oversight and Government Reform Subcommittee on National Security and the Subcommittee on Health Care, Benefits and Administrative Rules will hold a hearing titled “The Fiscal Costs of the President’s Executive Actions on Immigration” on Tuesday, March 17, 2015, at 2:00 p.m. The hearing will examine the fiscal costs that will accrue to the federal government and state governments as a result of the President’s executive actions on immigration.

BACKGROUND:

  • On November 20, 2014, the President announced a series of executive actions related to immigration. The President’s executive actions, among other things, instructed the Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security to allow non-citizens to apply for deferred action status, which, if granted, gives protection from deportation and authorization to work legally in the United States.
  • Those non-citizens will then be eligible to obtain work authorization, Social Security numbers, and other benefits.
