Comer Statement on Special Counsel Hur’s Report

WASHINGTON—House Committee on Oversight and Accountability Chairman James Comer (R-Ky.) issued the following statement on Special Counsel Robert Hur’s report:

“Americans expect equal justice under the law and are dismayed the Justice Department continues to allow Joe Biden to live above it. Joe Biden willfully retained classified documents for years in unsecure locations and intentionally disclosed them yet faces no consequences for his actions. The House Oversight Committee has been investigating Joe Biden’s mishandling of classified documents and we have uncovered key facts that unravel the White House’s and President Biden’s personal attorney’s narrative of events. Additionally, important questions remain about the extent of Joe Biden retaining sensitive materials related to specific countries involving his family’s influence peddling schemes that brought in millions for the Bidens. While the Justice Department has closed its investigation, the Oversight Committee’s investigation continues. We will continue to provide the transparency and accountability owed to the American people.”

Background:

• The House Oversight and Accountability Committee’s investigation has unearthed key details that contradict the White House’s and President Biden’s personal attorney’s statements about classified documents found at Penn Biden Center. In January 2023, President Biden’s personal attorney, Bob Bauer, released a statement that included a timeline of events that began on November 2, 2022, with the “unexpected” discovery of classified records at Penn Biden Center. The House Oversight Committee has learned, however, that the real timeline began in 2021. President Biden used significant federal resources, including five White House employees and a Department of Defense employee, to access and secure items at the Penn Biden Center.

• The Oversight Committee has requested interviews with current and former White House staff who were involved with organizing, moving, and removing boxes that contained classified materials, but the White House is blocking their testimony.

• The Special Counsel’s report confirms Joe Biden retained documents related to China and Ukraine, two countries the Bidens have solicited and received millions of dollars from.
