Oversight Committee Probes Foreclosure Abuses Against U.S. Servicemembers
| WASHINGTON, D.C. – Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Darrell Issa today sent letters of inquiry to ten of the nation’s leading mortgage servicers seeking information from about violations of the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act (SCRA).
“Servicemembers are afforded additional protections against foreclosure because answering a call to defend our nation shouldn’t result in the forfeiture of a home,” said Issa in sending the letters. “Laws were put in place to address cases like the reservist who takes a pay-cut when called to active duty and the Marine at a remote outpost who doesn’t even know his home mailbox received a foreclosure notice. This investigation intends to determine the extent of violations and what’s being done to address them.” The letters are a step in an investigation Chairman Issa and Ranking Member Elijah Cummings jointly agreed to pursue on July 14.
