PURPOSE:
  • To review cybersecurity challenge areas highlighted by the Government Accountability Office’s (GAO) High Risk interim report and discuss actions to resolve these challenges.
  • To examine how the Federal Chief Information Officer intends to coordinate a government-wide response to address cybersecurity challenges.
BACKGROUND:
  • On July 25, 2018, GAO will release an interim report identifying four major cybersecurity challenges and ten critical actions the federal government must take to address them.
  • According to the report, the federal government needs to implement a more comprehensive cybersecurity strategy and improve its oversight. Additionally, the federal government must focus on maintaining a qualified cybersecurity workforce; addressing security weaknesses in federal systems and information and enhancing cyber incident response efforts; bolstering the protection of cyber critical infrastructure; and prioritizing efforts to protect individual’s privacy and PII.
