Committee Issues Subpoena to State Department For Keystone XL Documents

WASHINGTON—Today, the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee issued a subpoena to Secretary of State John Kerry to provide all reports, recommendations, letters, and comments received by the State Department from the advising agencies pursuant to Executive Order 13337 regarding the permit for the Keystone XL pipeline.

Today’s subpoena follows letters to the Department on February 24th and June 15th requesting the same documents.

To date, the State Department has been unwilling to produce any of the requested materials.

“Congress has a right to review these documents. The Department has been uncooperative in the Committee’s efforts to conduct oversight of the Keystone XL permitting process and has shown an unwillingness to recognize the Committee’s legitimate interest in obtaining information. In light of this, a subpoena is necessary and appropriate,” said Chairman Chaffetz. “We will not be stymied in carrying out our responsibility to the American people to effectively oversee the Executive Branch.”
