Democrats Vote to Shield Biden Family from Accountability for Shady Foreign Business Deals
WASHINGTON—Today, House Committee on Oversight and Reform Democrats voted to kill Ranking Member James Comer’s (R-Ky.) resolution of inquiry, H. Res. 1243, which would have required President Biden to hand over documents related to the Biden family’s international business schemes and influence peddling. The resolution would have ensured the Oversight Committee receives important information needed to conduct oversight of the Biden family’s international business deals before, during, and after President Joe Biden’s tenure in public office. Ranking Member James Comer blasted Democrats for shielding the Biden family from congressional oversight and accountability.
“The American people deserve transparency about the Biden family’s suspicious foreign business deals, but Democrats today voted to conceal this information from them. We know Hunter and the Biden family peddled access to the highest levels of government to enrich themselves and they racked up over 150 suspicious activity reports in doing so. This is a huge threat to national security and our interests, and Americans need to know about Joe Biden’s involvement in these deals,” said Ranking Member Comer. “Democrats refuse to acknowledge any concerns about the Biden family’s business schemes and influence peddling. Democrats instead resorted to talking about climate change, drug prices, their Inflation Increase Act, and former President Trump. This is a smokescreen. While Democrats continue to shield the Biden family from any congressional oversight, Republicans will continue to press for answers and accountability.”
Background: Under the Biden Administration, the Treasury Department changed its policy for releasing Suspicious Activity Reports (SARs) to Congress under the Bank Secrecy Act. On May 25, 2022, Ranking Member Comer wrote to Secretary Yellen requesting all SARs generated for Hunter Biden and other Biden associates and family members’ financial transactions. He reiterated his request on July 6, 2022. These requests have been denied by the Treasury Department.
