Comer on Fox News: H.R. 51 is Democrats’ Attempt to Consolidate Power, Pack the Court, Pass Progressive Agenda
WASHINGTON—House Committee on Oversight and Reform Ranking Member James Comer (R-Ky.) joined “America’s Newsroom” on Fox News today to discuss the House of Representatives’ pending vote on H.R. 51 to grant Washington, D.C. statehood. During the interview, Comer outlined how H.R. 51 goes against the Founding Fathers’ intent, is unconstitutional, and is a power grab by Democrats to add two progressive senators to the U.S. Senate in order to pack the Supreme Court.
Key excerpts from Ranking Member Comer’s interview are below.
“D.C. shouldn’t not be a state because our Founding Fathers made it clear they wanted the capital city to be independent of any state . . . Washington, D.C. is the best represented city in America and in Congress. . . pound for pound Washington, D.C. has more influence than any major city in America on presidential elections.”
“This vote this week on making Washington, D.C. the 51st state is about one thing: Creating two new Democrat Senate seats. That’s all. We can argue the merits. I can give you a dozen reasons why it’s a bad idea. But at the end of the day, it’s all about a Democrat political power grab to create two new Democrat Senate seats, so they can end the filibuster, and they can pass all the liberal, progressive legislation that Nancy Pelosi is forcing down the throats of the Democrats in the House.”
When Fox News’ Dana Perino asked Ranking Member Comer if this had anything to do with packing the Supreme Court he said, “Absolutely. When you have Joe Manchin already on the record saying he’s not going to support ending the filibuster and he is not inclined to vote to pack the court, then Democrats realize they have to go to Plan B. And Plan B is to create two new Democrat Senate seats.”
