PURPOSE:
• To examine the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) and their efforts to coordinate drug control policy and spending across the federal government.
• To discuss the various proposals for reauthorization of ONDCP and its programs.
• To examine ONDCP’s responses to Government Accountability Office reviews and the resulting recommendations.
BACKGROUND:
• Congress created ONDCP in 1988 as part of the Anti-Drug Abuse Act of 1988.
• ONDCP is responsible for overseeing the Administration’s drug control efforts and advising the Administration on national and international drug control policies and strategies. ONDCP is also responsible for ensuring the effective coordination of drug programs across the federal government, as well as with various other governmental, non-profit, and private entities.
• Earlier this year, ONDCP sent the Administration’s proposed legislation for reauthorization of ONDCP to the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform and the Senate Committee on the Judiciary.
