Burchett Announces Hearing on Fixing Fraud in Federally Funded Homelessness Services
WASHINGTON—Subcommittee on Delivering on Government Efficiency Chairman Tim Burchett (R-Tenn.) today announced a hearing titled “Fixing Fraud and Failure in Federally Funded Homelessness Services.” During the hearing, members will assess how misguided homelessness prevention policies implemented by left-wing states and localities are wasting federal, state, and local taxpayer dollars, while enriching left-wing nonprofits. Members will showcase the city of Los Angeles as an example where public spending is simply perpetuating the cycle of homelessness. Members will also consider how the Trump Administration’s efforts to reverse failed policies offers a new path forward for homeless individuals and the neighborhoods they inhabit.
“Left-wing policies that refuse to bar behavior like drug abuse in public housing only perpetuate the cycle of homelessness. The Trump Administration has pointed out that most of the nation’s homeless suffer from drug-addiction, mental illness, or both. Cities like Los Angeles fail to recognize that, and they even spend public dollars to facilitate ‘safe’ drug use. What they end up facilitating are illegal drug markets run by criminal organizations. Democrat-run states and cities have wasted billions of taxpayer dollars trying to ‘eradicate’ homelessness, but they instead made the problem worse. And they have built up a nonprofit industrial complex of homelessness providers wedded to the status quo, with no incentive to actually reduce homelessness. Los Angeles is a case study of failed policy, fraud, and mismanagement that has been left unchecked for too long. It’s a shame that Mayor Karen Bass refuses to show up to testify about her role in all this. Homelessness has risen in Los Angeles on her watch, and she has overseen a culture of corruption among the nonprofits provided public dollars to address the issue. Members of this Subcommittee will hold these blue state and city officials accountable for their inaction in solving this pressing issue,” said Subcommittee Chairman Burchett.
