McClain to Hold Hearing with FDA’s Food Safety Director on Infant Formula Crisis

WASHINGTON—Health Care and Financial Services Subcommittee Chairwoman Lisa McClain (R-Mich.) today announced a hearing titled “FDA Oversight Part II: Responsibility for the Infant Formula Shortage.” The hearing will continue the Oversight Committee’s investigation into the 2022 nationwide infant formula crisis and examine the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) response.

“The Oversight Committee is investigating the decisions that led our nation into an infant formula crisis, ensuring our agencies are held accountable, and finding solutions to better protect American families in the future. At our last hearing on this subject, a former FDA official confirmed that the FDA’s internal failures created and exacerbated the formula crisis. We still have many unanswered questions. Why was the FDA unprepared for this crisis? Why did they fail to conduct adequate inspections of formula facilities? And why did they fail to heed whistleblower warnings? We will discuss these topics and more with Dr. Mayne, who was at the center of the FDA prior to and during the formula crisis and is a key witness in this investigation,” said Chairwoman McClain.
